A WOMAN has died following a fire at a house in Evesham early today.

The incident happened at a house in Sycamore Avenue, off Davies Road, in the town.

Fire fighters from Evesham raced to the scene when the alarm was raised at 6.25am and were joined by colleagues from Pershore and Broadway.

The incident was pronounced a fatality shortly before 8am, according to Hereford & Worcester fire service spokesman Alec Mackie.

The woman, believed to be in her mid-50s, was a divorcee who lived in the house with her two pet dogs. They were both found alive in the garden, having apparently escaped via the kitchen.

It is understood that the victim had been in bed when the fire started, although she was later discovered by firemen on the landing of the late 1970s semi detached house.

advertisement Mr Mackie said the fire had caused "exceptional" damage to the two-storey house in a quiet cul-de-sac.

Police scenes of crime officers and fire investigators were at the scene this morning trying to discover the cause of the fire.
