A WORCESTER charity is calling for volunteers to help them and in doing so they can help people on their career path.

Leukaemia CARE is even taking a stand at the Worcester Jobs and Careers fair to help entice others aboard.

The charity currently has four employees who started out as volunters for them.

Marketing manager for Leukaemia CARE Patricia Head said: "Many people use volunteering to refine or learn new skills, gain experience in a different sector if they are looking to make a career change, or simply see it as an opportunity to get back into the job market."

Ceri Williams is the charity's receptionist/administrator, who had taken early retirement after 36 years in banking. She originally volunteered to co-ordinate the Charity's Gift Aid claims. She then was offered a post with the team.

Dawn Knott, volunteers co-ordinator and Nicky Woods, the financial administrator also have found full time roles in the same way. However, the best success story is Eve Martin who started off as a volunteer in 1990 and is now the Deputy Chief Executive.

She said: "Volunteering is a great way to try things out if you are not sure about where your real skills lie or you feel that you have skills and abilities not being fully utilised. At Leukaemia CARE we value our volunteers very highly- whatever they can offer - because we couldn't operate without them. We need people foor a range of activities from specialised volunteering providing support to patients and their families, to running or helping out at fundraising events or working across a variety of functions at our head office in Worcester."

More opporttunities to discuss opportunities therough volunteering can be seen at Leukaemia CARE's stand at the Worcester News Jobs and careers Fair at the Guildhall, on High Street, on Thursday September 27.
