A FLOOD-hit Worcestershire town that was hit three times this summer is to receive £80,000 to help get back on its feet.

Tenbury Wells has been allocated the cash from Advantage West Midland, which donated £178,000 to help the economic recovery of all town centres in the Malvern Hills District Council area affected by the recent floods.

The money will be used to complete the clean up in Tenbury town centre and help get it back on its feet after it was hit by three bouts of flooding in as many weeks this summer.

Malvern Hills officers met local traders and councillors last week to decide how to spend the cash. The group agreed that priority should be given to pavement cleaning, removing debris from riverside brook areas, and refurbishing street furniture, such as bins and benches. The group also decided to resurrect the shop front' grant match funding scheme.

Coun Phil Grove, Malvern District Council Community, Safety & Economic Development portfolio holder, said: "We had a good walk around the town and it still has the scars caused by the floods. There is still debris and mud on shop fronts and some of the pavements need a deep clean. This funding will help make these essential repairs.

"It's also important that the town looks as inviting as possible and we'll be looking at how we can bring a bit of colour to those areas where repairs may take longer than anticipated."

One of the plans was to camouflage the former toilets area with a 40ft canvas mural painted by the children of Tenbury.

Mr Grove added: "It is important that Tenbury people and businesses feel they have not been forgotten. We want to move as quickly as possible to make sure it can get back in business."
