A MAN stole a bottle of gin and concealed it in his brother's wheelchair, a court heard.

Darren Simpson, of The Hopmarket in Worcester city centre, appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court yesterday, charged with theft.

Emma Lile, prosecuting, said the 25-year-old entered Somerfield in Angel Street, Worcester on Tuesday, July 10 and placed a £10.49 bottle of gin in his brother, Gary's wheelchair.

Andrew Childs, defending, said: "My client would be the first to acknowledge his record is rather prolific.

"His offending rather ran out of steam two years ago."

Mr Childs said Simpson had been placed on a community order with a drugs rehabilitation requirement and successfully managed to come off drugs.

He said the offence was committed because the single parent's benefits were stopped and he had no other income.

Simpson, who admitted theft, was fined £50 and must pay £60 prosecution costs.
