THE CHIEF steward of Worcester City Football Club - described as a big cuddly giant - is recovering in hospital from a stroke.

Garry McCarthy from Dines Green, Worcester, collapsed during the club's home match against Solihull Moors on Monday evening and was taken by ambulance to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Mr McCarthy, who is believed to be 46 years old, was taken ill during the game which ended in a 0-0 draw.

Mr McCarthy, originally from London, has been chief steward at the ground for the last three years.Tony Partridge, director of the club, who has been to see him in hospital said: "He does a great job for the club and he's a good friend. I was told he was staying in hospital for the time being. He used to be heavily involved with stewarding Crystal Palace Football Club. He has a very good sense of humour and he doesn't stand messing."

Lynn Gardener, an administrative worker at the club, said: "Worcester City Football Club wishes him a speedy recovery and we send our best regards to him. He's a lovely man. He's a big cuddly giant."
