School run goes crazy

PARENTS are parking outside a primary school in a Worcestershire village an hour before it finishes - so they can get a prime spot.

Community Support Officers are now having to watch parents park their cars during the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up at Kempsey Primary School.

The practice is to continue indefinitely.

People living nearby fear for the safety of the 265 pupils at the school in Ellsdon because parents are parking on pavements and across residents' driveways in a bid to get as close to the school as possible.

Parish councillor Pam Gerrard said the school bus regularly struggles to get past the traffic and added that she recently saw an offroad vehicle parked outside the school gates with all its wheels on the pavement.

"The only way to get around it was to either walk in the road or across somebody's garden and that to me is not on," she said. "It is very inconsiderate."

Mrs Gerrard, of Oakfield Drive, said children's lives are at risk.

"It's quite a bad place when they leave," she said. "The other day there was a child trying to cross the road and a car was reversing just outside the school."

Ann Hart, another parish councillor who has lived near the school for 40 years, said she too has witnessed many near misses in the past and added the parking problem has been an ongoing issue.

Nobody from the school wanted to comment, but Mrs Gerrard said letters are sent out to parents about the problem on a regular basis. She also said people have got permission to use the Talbot pub's car park off the A38 but not many do.

Mrs Hart said whenever officers are outside the school people park elsewhere for a few days but they always come back.

"It's just a nightmare," she said. "The police have even booked people which works for a bit but people get complacent and they come back. You can't expect the police to be here everyday though."

A police spokeswoman said officers would indefinitely patrol the area whenever possible.

"We would urge parents using cars for the school run to adhere to the restrictions in place at all times and spare some consideration for other road users and residents living in the area," she said. "There are safer areas to park close-by, even if it means a short walk to the school."

Surely a vehicle completely blocking the pavement is a commiting a parking offense!

There is no national law that bans parking cars and small vehicles on the pavement. A local council can however use traffic regulation orders to ban pavement parking in a specified area. The police or parking attendants would then enforce it. Councils can also use methods such as bollards to deter pavement parking. More information on this can be found in the 'Pavement Parking' Traffic Advisory Leaflet.

The irony is that the speed camera partnership vehicles are often parked on pavements, as are police vehicles.

Double yellow lines would ease enforcement but local residents' parking would then be restricted.

Let's hope common sense, lift sharing and consideration for the safety of children prevails.

Similar happens in other villages. Inconsiderate parking around school and cars parked right on a junction - and thats certainly illegal!
And sadly common sense will not prevail as more parents, many in 4 x 4's rush to school at the last minute in the morning but arrive as you say up to an hour early to collect.
Dangerous for the children but all this in the name of safety for your child!

So what is causing this epidemic of parents insistence on picking up thier kids from school?

It was like Christmas whenever i got a lift from a parent to or from school and we lived a good 4 miles from the school! its no wonder the news is full of news about fat kids!

But then, is the media to blame with its scaremongering about paedophiles on every street corner!

I had a 2 mile walk to school. What is wrong with these lazy so and so's? They could at least park a bit further away and not get in a stress about finding a spot right outside the school.

I'm sorry you suffer that baldrick, and I too wish they would be nicked.

I'm also sorry that some people with these disabled aids drive on the road, causing problems for motorists.

As for the school run, don't always blame the parents, I live down the bottom of Ronkswood, a load of new houses were built at Warndon, their kids went to the local infant & junior schools, mine were dispatched to St Johns.

So Mr Turkey Neck, if you think my wife is going to allow the youngsters to walk through the city center, & cross a major river, all on their own, your having a laugh, she had to be at work, so taking a couple of hours to walk there & back is out of the question (and why should she), public transport is a very expensive joke, so off in the car they went !

They are all at senior school now, which they walk to and from by themselves.

Its not always the parents chioce, other factors like building loads of new housing without extra school places in an area can also come into play.

Pavement parking threatens the lives of people on foot and their children. It's selfish and dangerous.

It's a problem in our area too. Read the article 'Hell is a Street with pavement parking' on the Living Streets website.
