Squirrel causes power cut

A SQUIRREL caused a power cut at Worcestershire Royal Hospital and more than 3,000 homes and businesses in Worcester this morning.

The power failure occured at about 11.15am and also affected Worcester Fire and Rescue Service headquarters in Charles Hastings Way, Worcester.

Fortunately, both buildings automatically switched to back up power and 3,054 homes, mainly in Warndon, had power restored within 20 minutes.

A spokeswoman for Central Networks said: "It was a squirrel that caused the power cut. I don't know the state of the squirrel but it chewed through some cables which couldn't have been good for it."

She said engineers are now in the process of replacing an overhead transformer in the Shire Business Park, in Wainwright Road, Worcester.

"They are doing that at the moment so hopefully they won't be too long.

"It affected 3,054 homes and businesses mainly in the Warndon area. It might still be affecting two customers but everyone else is back on."
