YOUNG achievers at a Worcester school have been rewarded for their work over the past year.

Elgar Technology College celebrated its class of 2007 with an awards ceremony at the school in Bilford Road.

Staff, students, governors and parents were joined by special guest for the evening Dan Pallett, the BBC Midlands Today presenter and former Worcester News reporter, who presented some of the awards to pupils.

Associate headteacher Julia Cook said it was an enjoyable evening and she was proud to see so many students rewarded for their hard work. She said all students had achieved very good GSCE results this year and identified eight pupils who had done particularly well. They were Sam Candlin, Kamil Chmurzynski, Kenneth Poyner, Ivanna Priestman, Rory Roberson, Lucy Simpson, Rebecca Wilde and Jordan Willis.

She added: "The school has achieved its best ever GCSE results with 41 per cent of students achieving five or more A*-C grades."

After the ceremony, students collected their leaver's year book and chatted with staff before saying their final goodbyes.

The school was placed in special measures by Ofsted earlier this year and has been working with Baxter College in Kidderminster to help get it back on track. David Seddon, headteacher at Baxter College and executive headteacher of Elgar, was at the awards ceremony where he gave a speech about the future of the school.

Worcestershire County Council is currently looking at the possibility of turning Elgar into the county's first academy school.
