CYCLISTS have organised a second weekend protest event, after they said the first was a "massive hit".

Around 40 members of Worcester Critical Mass rode around the city on June 26, as part of an event calling for better cycling provision.

And many decorated their bikes with signs or slogans, after organisers encouraged cyclists to bring “posters, signs and placards” to “send a message to the powers that be” for support for safer cycling in the city.

The Critical Mass event followed the format of similar ones held across the world, with whoever is the current leader choosing the route.

The movement has been described as direct action in which people meet at a set location and time and travel as a group through their local area on bikes to raise awareness of cycling safety issues.

On its Twitter page, Worcester Critical Mass said the follow up event would start at Cafe Viaduct from 10.15am on Saturday, July 24.

The group said: "Critical Mass isn’t a protest, it’s a movement. Join us. Everyone welcome even newbies. Please spread the word."

Previously asked about the issues raised by the group a Worcestershire County Council spokesman said: “The council is committed through our Local Transport Plan to improving walking and cycling links, or ‘Active Travel Corridors’, throughout the county.

“We have recently completed several improvements for walkers and cyclists including Hams Way Bridge and the refurbished Sabrina Bridge.”
