A lucky "well-known" buzzard was rescued by the Tenbury Fire Service after it collided with a car yesterday.

Fire crews were on their way back from tackling a garage fire in Great Witley when they were flagged down at around 8pm on the A443 at Stockton on Teme by a driver who witnessed the bird being struck by the vehicle.

After retrieving the stunned buzzard from the roadside, they called the RSPCA who told the firefighters to take the bird of prey back to the station where someone would later come and collect it for checks.

Worcester News:

Speaking to the Worcester News, Dan James, Crew Commander from the Tenbury Wells fire service, said: "The bird was very dazed when we first got to it, but did start to become more active as time went on.

"By 9.15pm the RSPCA had collected it to take it to their animal welfare centre where they identified a shoulder injury which they believed would heal quite quickly.

"Local reports say that the buzzard is well-known in the area as it flies along with the cars as they pass through."

Worcester News:

Mr James and his crew named the robust buzzard Beatrice, although he joked that they had no idea whether it was male or female.

The locally famous bird is expected to be released back into the wild soon, where it will hopefully keep a safer distance as it follows cars in the future.
