PEOPLE have been in tears over plans to build a care home on a beloved donkey field.

Campaigners have been out speaking with people living near to the field on Northwick Road affectionately known as the 'donkey field'.

Mary Drinkwater, who is leading the campaign, said people had been in tears over Northwick Developments plans for a 70-bed home.

She has been going door to door urging people to write to Wychavon District Council to object to the proposals which were initially turned down in February last year.

Mrs Drinkwater said: "It's a fantastic area, it is the last bit of natural beauty left in Northwick Road and it is such a shame that someone should want to destroy that.

"It's such a fantastic field and lots of people walking along here every day stop to look and see the river.

"It's the last bit in Northwick where you can see the river from the roadside.

"There's lots of wildlife in the field, it will be a terrible shame to destroy it.

"Once it is gone it is gone forever."

Mrs Drinkwater, of Northwick Road, has received lots of responses to a petition she set up but is urging people to write to object too.

"I've had lots and lots of people get in touch and we've been leafleting around the area.

"When we talk to people on the doorstep some are in tears, they are so upset.

"It's just such a peaceful area and we get all sorts of wildlife here - my daughter saw a muntjac deer not long ago."

Northwick care home objections

Last time the plans proved controversial with over 1,100 signatures on a petition and more than 160 objections lodged with the district council.

Mrs Drinkwater said she was amazed to see the plans had been resubmitted.

"It had such an effect on local people who voted it down, I can't believe they would have the cheek to resubmit it.

"If it goes ahead it shall be absolutely devastating.

"We need people to write letters and not just sign the petition because no matter how many people sign it will only count as one objection to the council."

The plans can be viewed via the planning section of Wychavon District Council’s website.

The application number is W/22/00227/OUT and public consultation ends on Thursday, March 3.
