A supermarket is closing its door for good this week after more than a century in St John's.

We headed to take one last look around the Co-op on what you would expect to be a busy Saturday (April 2) ahead of the closure next week.

These pictures show the instantly recognisable outside facade, as well as the spacious inside of The Bullring-based store.

Worcester News:

Ahead of the closure on Saturday, April 9, there was an empty aisle blocked off to shoppers along with empty freezer cabinets.

When we visited, only around three customers were in the store.

When the announcement was made a spokesperson for Co-op told us: “Co-op is moving forward with a real purpose and momentum, and while this usually involves opening new stores, we also regularly review our existing locations and have to take these difficult decisions.

Worcester News:

“The decision to close any store is not taken lightly, and only after careful consideration will our store in St John’s close on April 9.

"This is in no way a reflection on the commitment and hard work of colleagues, who have been informed and who are being fully supported.

Worcester News:

"We would like to thank the community for its support of this store over the years and, remain committed to serving our members and customers in Worcester from our stores locally and across the area.”

St John's councillor Richard Udall was among those who led a fight to try and get the decision overturned.

Cllr Udall said: "It is incredibly sad to be losing this store.

"It sad for the members of staff losing their jobs.

"And it is sad for the people of St John's, particularly the elderly, that relied on it to get basic commodities and now have to travel.

"The Co-op is definitely going to be missed when it closes this week.

"The car park is also going to be missed, that was also relied upon.

"We want the developers to ensure the space continues as retail - a food retailer would be ideal."
