The results of a traffic survey support calls for a 20mph speed limit on a city road, a county councillor has claimed.

Dines Green residents have expressed concerns that drivers are travelling around the estate at inappropriate speeds, leading to calls for Gresham Road’s current 30mph limit to be reduced.

Councillor Richard Udall, who represents St John’s on Worcestershire County Council, wants to formally request a new 20mph limit but needs evidence first.

A speed survey undertaken by the county council between May 24 and May 27 appears to have given him just that.

It found the average speed of vehicles on Gresham Road was 17mph for southbound traffic and 18mph for northbound traffic.

This is taken from a survey of almost 700 daily vehicle movements.

“The survey supports my request for a 20mph speed limit,” said Cllr Udall.

“The problem is not the average speed, the problems are caused by those driving above average speed.

“We need to protect pedestrians, cyclists and children from those motorists who speed.”

Cllr Udall further explained that if the average speeds had been found to be above 20mph, this would have made his campaign more difficult as the council “would oppose any new speed restrictions without expensive changes to the highways.”

St John's Community Speedwatch scheme

He previously told the Worcester News he had received a number of complaints from residents about speeding motorists, adding: “They may not be breaking the law but they may be driving inappropriately for the location which is dangerous.”

Residents also named Grenville Road as a big risk as there are so many parked cars along the road.

Cllr Udall added: “We are hoping to make an application to introduce a Community Speedwatch scheme in St John’s, where local residents can help the police with speed enforcement.

“The police will train volunteers and provide them with a speed gun and warning signs, any driver caught speeding will get a warning letter.

“St John’s councillors have agreed to be volunteers and are in advanced talks with the police about introducing a scheme.”
