Kills – Midnight Boom

4:14pm Thursday 20th March 2008

THE only thing you may know about the Kills is that the male in this two piece group is Kate Moss' current beau.

They deserve to be known for a lot more than that bit of gossip, and this, their third album, may finally bring them the wider recognition they deserve.

The album starts off with lyrical banter between Jamie Hince and the other half of the Kills, Alison Mosshard, in the form of the single "U.R.A fever". It has a hypnotic chanting chorus, and uses a variety of instruments, something that occurs throughout the album.

Alison Mosshard takes on most of the vocals, leaving Jamie to rock out on guitar and other assorted instruments. Her voice is husky, and full of depth. Similar, in fact, to PJ Harvey who she has stated is one of her heroes.

Standout tracks are "Cheap & Cheerful", a playful song, with Alison proclaiming her love of all things crazy, and "Last Day of Magic" which is a lovely scuzzy guitar fest, and features impassioned vocals from both Alison & Jamie.

"Midnight Boom" has potential to take the Kills out of their cult garage band status. If you're a fan of The White Stripes or PJ Harvey than this is definitely an album for you!
