Council to consider Sixways expansion

COUNCILLORS will decide if Worcester Warriors can go ahead with ambitious plans for an £8m extension to their Sixways ground on Thursday.

As previously reported in your Worcester News, an extension to the East stand would allow nearly 2,000 more rugby fans to watch the team play at the stadium.

Work is already underway on a replacement North stand, a new concourse, Esporta Health and racquets club and car park at Worcester Rugby Football Club.

However, the club also wants to enlarge the East stand's capacity by 1,904 seats by increasing the height of the stand from 11.5m (38ft) to 20.6m (68ft).

The proposals also included a new ticket office, club shop, club offices, staff facilities, match control room and a classroom for disadvantaged and underachieving children.

Bars, toilets, a restaurant, VIP lounge and boxes will also be created while portacabins and sheds used as offices, a shop, match control and a ticket office would then be removed.

The decision will be made by Wychavon district councillors but council officers have recommended the plan be approved.

Although the club sits in the greenbelt officers do not think the stand will have a major impact and say it will be the same height as the North stand.

No objections to the proposal have been received by the council.

The club currently has room for 10,050 fans but the Rugby Football Union requires all premiership clubs to be able to house 12,500 spectators by 2010 and 15,000 by 2011.
