A MAN stole a television to fund his prescription drug habit.

Ian Beckett took the LCD screen from Woolworths in Worcester High Street on Tuesday, March 11.

Store security guards caught him trying to hide it under a plastic bag.

At Worcester Magistrates Court Alex Warren, prosecuting, said the 39-year-old, of St Paul's Hostel, Tallow Hill, Worcester, intended to sell it on to buy depression medication.

The theft put him in breach of a conditional discharge imposed in January 2008 for shoplifting.

Jason Patel, defending, said: "This is a man who has engaged voluntarily with a community drugs team - surely that's indicative of motivation to change."

District judge Bruce Morgan sentenced Beckett to a community order and a six-month drug rehabilitation requirement, subject to two months in custody suspended for 12 months.
