CAR tax evaders are costing law abiding drivers an estimated £79m a year.

The shocking national figure, revealed this week, is why West Mercia Constabulary and the DVLA have vowed to crack down on untaxed vehicles.

"Tackling this problem is an on-going issue for West Mercia," said chief inspector Andy Udall, from the constabulary's force operations."

He said Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology was regulary used on the roads throughout Worcestershire and Herefordshrie.

"We are determined to deny criminals the use of roads in West Mercia and will continue to work with the DVLA catch car tax evaders," he said.

It is estimated that 80 per cent of untaxed vehicles also have no insurance. In order to identify tax evaders, police use DVLA records. And if guilty, drivers are fined.

The drivers who attempt to avoid this by not registering their details with DVLA in the first place, are being targeted through a national wheel clamping operation, which can result in their cars being clamped, impounded and crushed.
