A HOUSING development in Worcester has been officially named - by a seven-year-old schoolgirl.

Pupils from Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Primary School, in Bransford Road, St John's, took part in a competition to name new homes, which will be on the former Cinderella Works factory site, in Watery Lane.

The winning name - Willis Place - was suggested by Naomi Jauncey, who took inspiration from James Willis, who founded Cinderella Shoes in 1848.

Naomi has won £25 WHSmith vouchers and £100 for her school.

"It is always important for us to name our new home developments after someone or something which relates to the local area and in particular we like to involve the local community whenever we can," said David Child, sales director for site developers Barratt West Midlands.

"Naomi's thoughtful suggestion will ensure the history of the site is not forgotten and it will soon be put to print in the signage and brochure material for the new development."

The company, which recently submitted planning permission, hopes to refurbish the old factory building which fronts Watery Lane and transform it into 23 loft-style apartments.

The remainder of the site, which has been derelict since summer 2006, will be demolished to make way for 84 new homes.
