SIR - Further to the letter by David Hibbitt (Saturday, April 26). I too wrote to Gordon Brown and asked for an explanation as to why I was to see my tax double due to the abolition of the base rate band.
I received a reply, written by some minion, telling me that as he was a very busy man I would receive a reply from HM Treasury. I am still waiting and I do not really hold out too much hope of ever receiving anything.
To continue the saga, despite the partial U-turn by a Prime Minister acting under duress, my next question for him is, why will those of us to be compensated have to wait until the end of the year?
We were penalised by his actions from the beginning of the new financial year - so will the petrol stations and the supermarkets allow us to pay later?
It is about time that the powers that be realised that we are not prepared to be conned any more.
Barbara Wardle, Worcester.
