Birley may be on his way to City

6:25pm Monday 12th May 2008

FORMER Birmingham City trainee Matt Birley could be set to join Worcester City this summer.

Birley, currently with Bromsgrove Rovers, is thought to be one of several players on manager Richard Dryden's radar.

The 21-year-old, who came on as a sub for Blues in the Premiership at Chelsea in 2005, is believed to have been sounded out about a possible move to St George's Lane.

Birley is one of Rovers' better players and he is likely to court interest now that the club have been relegated to British Gas Business Division One Midlands.

The midfielder has impressed since he arrived at the Victoria Ground in September after being released by Blues, scoring five goals in 26 appearances.

Dryden has made no secret of his belief Worcester are a better team when they exploit the flanks and Birley would seem to fit the bill. Birley is based in Bromsgrove and would therefore also fit Dryden's criteria of players living within a 50-mile radius of Worcester.

City hope to find out this week whether they are to be switched to Blue Square South for the 2008/09 campaign.

The Football Association's Alliance committee was scheduled to meet yesterday ahead of tomorrow's expected ratification by the league sanctions committee.
