Uphill struggle for support walkers

3:59am Thursday 15th May 2008

MORE than 300 children and their teachers from schools across Worcestershire and Herefordshire are set to walk to the top of the Malvern Hills this afternoon to show their continuing support for outdoor education centres.

The march will start at different locations in car parks at the bottom of the hills before the groups set off towards the top of the Worcestershire Beacon about 5.15pm.

Each child will be bringing £1 with them as a contribution to the work of Worcestershire Outdoor Education Development Association (WOEDA), a charity established to support, champion, and raise funds for the outdoor centres at Malvern, Upton Warren and Llanrug.

We previously reported how the Llanrug Outdoor Education Centre in Snowdonia was saved following widespread public outcry and an inquiry by Worcestershire County Council's overview and scrutiny committee.

Llanrug will now continue to be subsidised by the county for a further three years, giving managers and council officers time to revamp the way the centre is run and ensure it breaks even by 2011.
