Gigi - Ombersley Amateur Dramatic Society

THANK heaven for little girls.
And thank heaven - or perhaps thank the cast and crew - for this impressively ambitious production of the much-loved musical Gigi. It was quite apt for the society to celebrate its 50th anniversary with such a sparkling show. Everything - from the detail of the set and costumes to passionate performances of the chorus and lead cast - was enjoyable. Being seated in the round added an extra layer of excitement and the atmosphere, even before the play began, was tingling.
It was clear that experienced director Martain Copland-Gray, in his first production with the village group, wanted to step away from the 1958 film adaptation starring Leslie Caron and Maurice Chevalier and create characters of his own. He succeeded.
The witty dialogue and memorable lyrics were delivered well, especially by Karina Myles who gave a fantastic performance as Gigi, the little girl who must grow up while Paris never changes.
Her voice was outstanding; reaching every corner of Ombersley Memorial Hall and ensuring all eyes focused on her. Kevin Styles, as Gaston, was similarly impressive; managing to retain French nonchalance with genuine affection for young Gigi.
The supporting cast clearly enjoyed themselves and it was infectious, as well as a joy to hear each individual voice as they performed on every square inch of floor available to them.
If only every amateur production was like this.
