Two of Worcester’s scout groups are in danger of closing if new volunteers don’t come forward to run them.

The groups at risk are in the WR2 postcode, which includes the St John’s area of the city and villages including Powick and Hallow.

Hundreds of children are waiting to join Scout groups across Worcestershire - but there aren’t enough adults to run them.

Lucy Barkas, Worcester’s district commissioner, said: “It’s a real issue - we have about 200 people on waiting lists across the district. This is across all sections and for all 12 groups in the district.

“We started Squirrels, which is for four to six-year-olds, 12 months ago but only three of our groups have been able to operate a Squirrels unit because there are not enough adults.

“We’re looking for all sorts of adult volunteers including leaders and assistant leaders.

“We’ve seen a huge upturn since the Covid lockdowns in parents wanting their children to get out and learn new, practical skills in that outdoor environment, to learn social skills and resilience.

“I would say to parents, if you are bringing your child to one of our groups, why not hang around and help? If you can help build a fire or put a tent up, we’ll take all offers of help.”

Two Scout groups at risk in WR2

All volunteers are required to pass a DBS check, which will be carried out by the Scouts, and to complete two training modules online. These cover issues including basic safeguarding.

Further training is available to any volunteers wishing to become a section leader or to specialise in a specific skill or activity.

While there are dozens of different roles to be filled, the lack of a section leader can leave a Scout group at risk of closing down altogether.

“There are two groups at risk in the WR2 area,” said Lucy. “In some places we’re looking for assistant leaders, people to help out, but here we are in need of section leaders.”

Lucy said a recruitment event held at the Guildhall at the weekend was “absolutely fabulous” and encouraged anyone thinking about volunteering to make contact.

“We need trustees, treasurers, committee members. People can help complete projects that will look great on their CVs. Just get in touch and we’ll find the right position for you.”
