A MOTHER and her baby had to be resuced from the River Severn in Worcester earlier today.

The 12 month-old baby and mother had fallen into the river while feeding the swans at around 11.35am at the city's South Quay.

Emergency services were called and members of the public had thrown lifebelts into the river to help keep the mother and baby afloat.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Paramedic Keith Williams then climbed down the quay wall to talk to the mother in an attempt to keep her calm.

"Whilst doing that, he spotted a rower passing by. Keith called across for help and the rower helped pull the mother and baby out of the water and onto a landing site.

"Both mother and baby were cold and in shock. They were both taken on blue lights to Worcestershire Royal Hospital. The hospital had been put on alert awaiting their arrival."
