A MILITARY-themed Royal Mint 50p coin sold for £1,000 on a popular auction website.

This Victoria Cross Medal 50p sold for £1000 on eBay on Sunday, December 19, and was sold from the nearby market town of Stratford-upon-Avon.

The coin also had an express delivery postage fee of £6.85, raising the grand total of the transaction to £1006.85.

The coin was sold by a seller with 100 per cent positive feedback, and was sold after just one bid.

The coin depicts the medal itself, with the letters VC visible to the right of the medal and the valuation of 'fifty pence' below.

Other 50p coins that could fetch you big fees on auction sites include the Kew Gardens 50p coin, the Beatrix Potter coin collection and the Olympic 50p coin collection.

According to The Royal Mint, there were two military coins that honour the Victoria Cross, which were issued in 2006 to commemorate the 150-year anniversary of the medal.

The Victoria Cross is "the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy", and Queen Victoria signed a royal warrant for its creation at Buckingham Palace on January 29 1856.

The other coin commemorating the medal shows a soldier carrying a wounded comrade.
