A NEW £100k zebra crossing with speed hump is set to be installed on a Lower Wick estate to put the brakes on speeding motorists.

The crossing, which will be on a raised cushion, will be put in on Canada Way outside a row of shops, near the Co-op end of the 30mph road.

It is hoped work will start in the autumn after councillor Alan Amos worked with residents and council officers to come up with a solution to the problem of speeding.

Councillor Amos said: "We want people to see there's a zebra crossing there, which means they will slow down, so the precise location will be where it's visible to motorists coming from either direction.

"The crossing will have a raised cushion, so will act like a traditional speed bump slowing down the traffic, as well as enhancing pedestrian safety.

"We have many elderly residents in the vicinity and their safety has always been one of my top priorities."

After calls for action councillor Amos staged two residents meetings last year, where the scheme was agreed upon.

He said: "We have the funding in place, the design is done, all the feasibility studies have been done now we need to get it installed, which should be in the autumn."

Some people on social media questioned the placing of the crossing on a bend, but Cllr Amos said the safety of the crossing has been studied and verified by council officers.

He said: "They wouldn't have gone ahead if there were safety concerns."

Cllr Amos has sent letters to residents informing them of the move, which he says have met with positive feedback from people pleased that something was being done.

He said in his letter: "As County Highways would not pay for the whole scheme I have used a considerable amount of my own highways budget to fund half the cost because I have listened to your concerns and appreciate it is a very important matter for you."
