A family described the moment their car caught fire in rush hour traffic, leaving the vehicle completely gutted as the emergency services rushed to the scene.

The driver pulled over in London Road in Worcester on Friday morning as smoke billowed out of the car bonnet during rush hour.

She did not wish to give her name but said she and her daughter were unhurt in the blaze which caused delays during the rush hour.

A single crew from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service tackled the fire, which left the car gutted.

Police cars on blue lights were also at the scene as officers kept traffic flowing by giving priority to one lane at a time.

The driver said she pulled over as soon as she saw smoke emanating from the car's bonnet. The car had three occupants, including her daughter.

Fire tape was placed around the vehicle and police officers directed traffic with one of the lanes on London Road closed, causing some delays for drivers.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "Officers attended a car fire on London Road in Worcester this morning to assist with traffic."

We approached Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service media team but a spokesperson was unavailable by the time we went to press.
