TWO new parking spaces are to be created in Worcester city centre for people to pick up and drop off pay-by-the-hour cars.
One space will be made available in the 45-minute stay parking bays in Union Street, off Friar Street, and another one will be created along Foregate Street, beyond the taxi rank close to the Odeon cinema.
Providing the two extra places is part of the original agreement with WhizzGo after it launched the car club in the city in November last year, supported by Worcestershire County Council and Worcester City Council.
The county council’s cabinet member for the environment Coun Derek Prodger said: “Improving transport services is a county council priority and I would like to encourage as many people as possible to take advantage of this good scheme.
“WhizzGo ticks a lot of boxes as the price to use a car is very reasonable, especially when considering the rise in petrol prices. It also offers the benefits of easing congestion and helping the environment as it helps cut down the number of cars on our roads. This aspect is very important to us as a Beacon Award-winning authority.”
The eco-friendly car club scheme has been successful in larger cities around the country but Worcester is the smallest place it has been tested.
In March WhizzGo increased its pool of cars in the city from five to seven.
The small-engined vehicles, which feature the WhizzGo logo, operate from car parks in Worcester at the Cattle Market, Pitchcroft, Swanpool Walk, Tallow Hill, St Martin’s Gate and County Hall.
The move costs the city council more than £6,000 a year in lost revenue from motorists who cannot park in the designated bays.
WhizzGo cars are available to anyone aged 18 and above who holds a valid UK driving licence. People can sign up online or by phone after paying £25 to join and £125 for a one-off insurance deposit.
Cars can be booked through the internet or by phone weeks in advance or as little as a minute before a vehicle is needed.
Each car, accessed using a smart card and PIN, is provided with a fuel card which can be given as payment once the car has been filled up.
