A SINGLE mother who is pregnant with her second child has criticised her landlord for failing to carry out repairs to her home, despite being told to do so by council officials.

Rachel Snell said Worcester City Council sent a letter to landlord Geoff Bott in December last year, telling him he must make improvements to the property in Lowesmoor, Worcester, but nothing has been done.

However, Mr Bott said he was in the process of getting quotes for the work, which would be carried out imminently, and added that the flat was in “perfect condition” when Miss Snell moved in.

Miss Snell, aged 19, said: “I moved in here two years ago when I was due to start college. It was the only place I could find. It wasn’t great but it has slowly deteriorated and now I have one daughter and another baby on the way, I need these repairs carried out.”

Miss Snell listed a catalogue of problems at the property, including mould on the ceilings and walls, a broken front door, leaks in the ceiling and a hole in the bathroom floor.

“My daughter, Courtney is two years old and she keeps getting chest infections because of the mould and damp,” she said.

“I complained to the council and they sent out a letter saying repairs must be carried out, but nothing was done, and now they don’t seem interested in doing anything about it.”

Miss Snell receives housing and council tax benefits and said she was told by the city council that once her second baby is born in September it will then look to find her alternative accommodation. However, this could take up to 18 months.

Mr Bott said Miss Snell’s claims were unfair. “The flat was in perfect condition when she moved in,” he said. “Now the doors have been ripped off. I accept that I need to repair the black on the ceiling, which was caused by a leak from the flat above, and I am doing so.”

Mr Bott said he had arranged for a builder to visit the flat, but he was left waiting for three hours because Miss Snell was out.

He said: “I am doing what I can. But when people don’t turn up when you have arranged for people to come round what more can I do?”

However, Miss Snell refuted his version of events.

Nina Warrington, strategic housing services manager at Worcester City Council, confirmed a letter had been sent to Mr Bott, but said as the problems at the flat were deemed category two, not one – which is high priority – it could not take legal action.

“We only have certain powers under the housing health and safety rating system,” she said. She advised Miss Snell to take further advice either from the Citizen’s Advice Bureau or Worcester Housing and Benefits Advice Centre.

Maybe the father(s) of the children would like to do the repairs!

Here we go again - 'please feel sorry for me'. No. I don't feel sorry for you. 19 years old, single, with one child and another on the way? No No No No No! She has recourse to the law if she has a problem with her landlord - she doesn't need to go running to the press. There is plenty of free advice to be had from the Citizen's Advice Bureau and similar organisations.

I only hope some well meaning do-gooder doesn't decide to help her out. If anyone is feeling charitable please give the money to those who really need it. There are plenty of local children's charities whose need is greater than hers.

Can you tell this article has made me really mad? It flipping well has!

What is so terrible about this girls predicament? She has a roof over her head all paid for and any repairs that do get carried out are done for free. I would say that the landlord has a case for making her pay for new doors. Maybe she thinks that going to the press will help her jump the council list - dream on young lady.

These people never learn. They go running to the press expecting everyone to feel sorry for them and they don't. There are people much worse off than she is and never complain. I agree with everyone else, a roof over her head and all paid. what more does she want??

Gawd!, what a lovely bunch you all are.

Clearly this girl's predicament is of her own making but you should not forget that an entirely innocent child is involved in all this. That child should not have to suffer ill health because of this.

If the doors have been damaged then she should have to pay for them to be replaced or repaired. Likewise, if the flat is damp through an ingress of water and there is a hole in the bathroom floor, then the landlord has a duty to put this right. He is after all getting his rent on the property irrespective of where it originates from.

From what I am reading in the comments, there seems to be some sort of notion that if someone else is paying the rent then it is OK for the landlord to neglect his duties and allow the property to become sub-standard. Sorry, can't agree.

Is it newsworthy, well that is surely the editor's decision.

Sorry Logik - can't see where any of us have said the landlord is not responsible.

You are quite right about the health of her child - so why the heck is she having another one if her situation is so terrible? Still can't find an ounce of sympathy for her.

I refer you to the story a few weeks ago when a girl in a similar position bleated that she 'couldn't live on fresh air' and someone gave her £1000! What a result that was for her! Dangerous precedent set there I think...

have we been here before?Iam sick to death of hearing about these people that I work for, reaping the benefits of my taxes.Get the fathers to help do the repairs. We all do some of our own even if they are rented properties. These mothers are just parasites.

CJH, my concern was for the child, I don't believe I offered her any sympathy.

Nobody really mentioned the condition of the property, but I did get the feeling coming that if she wasn't paying then the rent directly she should be grateful for anything and not complain.

Whatever your views on the mother, and mine are probably the same as yours, you cannot let an innocent child suffer because of those views.

Hope that clarifies things.

No doubt the father or fathers of her children are not shirking their responsibily, even though the council has decided she is in satifactory accommodation which
A. She does not appear to look after
B. Needs some attention
Logik, you are right, no child deserves this, unfortunately you cannot chose your parents.

This young woman is clearly, quite feckless. However the child comes first,so the father should be charged with child neglect. When I was a lad if you didn't provide for your children,a prison sentence, was inevitable.
