We want to visit guiding centre – can you help?

12:35pm Thursday 3rd July 2008

GIRL guides in Worcester need £3,000 to visit a world guiding centre in Switzerland.

The 9th Worcester Guides, who meet at the scout hut in Swanpool Walk, St John’s, want to spend a week in the Swiss Alps and stay at Our Chalet, one of only four official guiding centres in the world.

The memorable trip will cost the group £3,335 and the youngsters need help raising funds.

Guider Karen Martens said: “We’ve never been abroad before so everyone is really excited.

“The girls have already started raising money. What’s good is that they understand what they’re raising money for.

“They can see the goal. We’ve sat down as a unit and talked about the need to work hard from now until we go.”

The Guides, aged between 10 and 17, want to ride on the famous Jungfraujock Railway through the Alps and catch a cable car to the Schilthorn summit, which featured in the James Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

The Swiss chalet in the Bernese Alps was opened in 1932 by an American girl scout leader.

It runs year-round activities for Guides from around the world.

The Worcester group has already raised more than £750 completing an eight-mile walk across the Malvern Hills and bag-packing at Co-op supermarket in St John’s.

The Worcester Lions Club has donated £155 enabling the 9th Worcester girls to buy international neckerchiefs, which all Guides are encouraged to wear on trips abroad.

But there is still a long way to go.

Later this year they will do a sponsored skipping event and a fund-raising talent show.

Anyone with ideas on how to raise more funds should call Ms Martens on 01905 429190.
