A Caribbean theme will bring Droitwich High Street alive for a summer party on Saturday.

The party, between noon and 4pm has been organised on the first anniversary of the weekend of last year’s floods, which devastated many of the street’s businesses.

Despite the problems, traders decided to hold the party to celebrate their return to business as usual.

The event will kick off with Samba Band, Bandasemnome, from Alvechurch followed by entertainment including puppet shows, circus skills, balloons, stilt walkers and face painting.

A pirate boat will be in Gurney’s Lane while shoppers can sample exotic fruits and Mexican goodies in stalls outside Waitrose.

Art work created by the town’s schoolchildren will also be on display and craft and markets stalls will be set up in Saltbarrow market.

Droitwich Retailers Organisation for Independent Traders, which was set up following the flooding, has organised the event. Chairman Jan Bolton said: “The floods of last July were a complete shock and I know how hard many traders have worked over the last few months to re-open their businesses.”

“Whilst we cannot forget what happened, we feel it is now time to look to the future.

“The party will hopefully bring back the good feel factor to the High Street and remind people we are open for business.”
