Worcester park celebrated again

A WORCESTER park has been named one of the best green spaces in England for the second year running.

Gheluvelt Park, which dates back to 1922, is one of 742 parks across the country to have been given a Green Flag award - the national standard for quality.

Welcoming the news Ian Yates, parks and cemeteries manager for Worcester City Council - which oversees the Barbourne park, said: “Gheluvelt Park is a lively venue throughout the year.

“It offers something for everyone and is a beautiful haven away from the busy city environment.

“The city council is incredibly proud of our open spaces and works hard to maintain them. We know how much our residents enjoy visiting parks and we are always focusing on ways to enhance their experience.”

Gheluvelt boasts a brook, duck-pond, bandstand, War Memorial gate, paddling pool, tennis courts and Sons of Rest facilities. It also houses the Pump House Environment Centre, a converted and renovated Victorian pumping station which is now the home of the Duckworth Worcestershire Trust environmental charity.

It was originally opened in June 1922 to commemorate the Worcestershire Regiment 2nd Battalion’s actions at the Battle of Gheluvelt during the First World War.
