Youngsters’ road safety lesson with huge truck

12:10pm Sunday 20th July 2008

A 22-TONNE lorry rolled in to a Pershore school to teach pupils about road safety.

The truck was driven in to Abbey Park Middle School as part of a national safety training programme run by the Exel Foundation and DHL for Morrisons.

TACS – Trucks and Child Safety – aims to teach children aged between seven and 11 to be safe on the road by creating a greater awareness of large vehicles and their associated dangers.

A spokesman at the school said: “They showed the pupils exactly what a driver can and cannot see in the mirrors and children were educated as to the noise the engine makes.”

The vehicle’s blind spots were also indicated and the driver demonstrated how difficult it is for a driver to hear a child shouting while inside the cab.

Every child at the school got the chance to spend time on board the lorry, learning all about the dangers.
