A NEW £3 million mosque is being planned for the heart of Worcester.

Islamic leaders plan to build the mosque and education centre in Stanley Road, off Wyld’s Lane, within the next five to 10 years.

The mosque would replace one in Tallow Hill which will eventually be sold to help cover the costs of the project.

It could have as many as 600 worshippers at peak times and will be the first-purpose built mosque in the two counties, according to Muslim Welfare Association chairman Malik Mohammed Fayaz.

Mr Fayaz said: “This is something that will add a landmark to the city that people will admire and bring more grace and value to the area.

“It will be used to bring people of all faiths together and facilitate better understanding between the communities. It will not just be a mosque but an education centre to educate future nations and generations.

“It will be brilliant to have young and old using the centre together. There are no plans to use it as a school, it will be more of a community centre.

“It will give the community the opportunity to interact with Muslims and get to know about their culture.”

The Muslim Welfare Association bought the one acre site, which includes Unity House, a day centre for adults with physical disabilities, from Worcestershire County Council in March for £600,000.

The city’s Muslims took under a year to raise the money to buy the site but need £3 million more for the finished mosque.

Under the proposals Unity House would be demolished and a mosque with minarets built in its place.

Mr Fayaz is also committed to the principle that women will be able to attend the mosque and worship.

Mr Fayaz said a series of meetings had already taken place with local residents about the plans.

At the moment there are three mosques in the city – Jalalabad Centre in Vincent Road, also off Wyld’s Lane; Tallow Hill Mosque; and Almadina Islamic Centre in the Arboretum.

The precise design of the mosque has yet to be decided and Muslim leaders do not know when a planning application will be handed in to Worcester City Council.

Mr Fayaz said the mosque/ education centre would be no higher than the surrounding buildings and could be served either by a multi-storey car park or by an underground one.

However, as many of the worshippers live locally he hopes they would be able to walk or share cars.

The building is empty at the moment apart from one part used for Learn Direct adult education courses.

A Worcestershire County Council spokesman confirmed the land was sold on Friday, March 7.

She said: “The premises were declared surplus once a replacement centre was provided at St Helens, Worcester. The buildings were in poor condition and did not suit county council needs.”

Contributions to the mosque appeal should go to Worcester Muslim Welfare Association, Tallow Hill Road, Worcester, WR5 1JU.

Muslim community needs Masajid and state funded Muslim schools, whereever they reside. The demand for Masajid and state funded Muslim schools is in accordance with the law of the land. They is not asking for any favour. They pay all sorts of taxes and contribute for the prosperity of the British society. They are less burden on the social services.

Probably because we'd have to tread on broken glass about what we say, just in case it gets taken out of context in the current climate.

I think were all frightened of being branded racist Common Sense if we dare to speak our mind.

It may have escaped your notice Iftikhar, but this is not a muslim country.

"The demand for Masajid and state funded Muslim schools is in accordance with the law of the land."

Just what law says this and where.

And just exactly what will you be teaching in your "state funded" schools?

OK, this is obviously an open discussion!
So what are your abjections exactly, are they on religious grounds?, social grounds? or is it fear of the unknown?

Living and working in that area, I am aware of the large Asian community, but I don't profess to understand the Muslim faith or the traditions, so I think I'll ask.

once I have an answer, I can then comment more knowledgeably on the subject and not appear to be a narrow minded anti-change campaigner.

I wonder if you voted in the local or national elections?

this site is worth 1 million plus, i never saw it advertised on the open market. Is the county council showing favouritism to certain self interest groups.Do they have a legal duty to obtain best value ? This is not a community facility in the broad sense of the word.will the county council provide other religous or community groups with subsidised land or facilities ? was the former mosque subsidised and if so who will benefit from any profit from its sale ? i am curious.

Hopefully it will be in keeping with the rest of the area and not stand out like a sore-thumb.

With the desperate need for social housing what an earth were the council thinking of selling a site in the city which was ideal for this purpose. It seems if you are from a minority group in this country whatever you want you will get,if there are 3 mosques in Worcester now why on earth do we need another one?

i am puzzled by this "law of the land" comment. Whose law and whose land? sounds like we are being ordered to build this thing!
i have no objections to it being built at all as long as every opinion is respected and everyone understands that we can't all agree!

As long as we can build one Christian Church in a Muslim country, for every Mosque built in England - that seems fair to me.

Would that be a problem - or is it a one-way traffic, this Muslim thing?

Is it a "Heads we Win - Tails, you Lose" situation?

If so, then it isn't fair to the Christian people of our land....and the Brits don't like unfairness!

while i am pleased to hear mr malik state he approves of women attending the mosque for pray as chairman why does he not appoint any female members to the mosque committee ? this would tell women that they are welcome.maybe 50% of muslims in worcester are women but where are they represented ? Are any women on the committees of any mosque in worcester ? i doubt it..

I may be out of line for the following comments, but lets be honest.

Many people simply have zero tolerance for Muslims and simply don't like them, and never have, particularly in the current climate of terrorism awareness, and i'm sure there are more than just a few people out there who'd prefer not to see a mosque constructed, and indeed possibly see the Muslim community in Worcester dispatched elsewhere.

How many non-Muslims will object to the planning application? A few i expect.

I may sound harsh, but i'm sure that is what the general consensus may be. If i'm wrong then i apologise, but i suspect, rightly or wrongly, that i might be right.

Hear hear cmot,Can anybody inform me as to what is the proceedure for registering objections to planning aplications? Or is it a done deal? fayaz seems to think so!

Common Sense, Pershore says...

I had heard - and it's only hearsay - that they don't "apply for Planning Permission", they tell the Council where they propose to build it!

The Councils (usually) meekly rubber stamp it and as more Muslims get elected, the easier it will become.

(As with Dudley)
