SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has defended its decision to cut down 75 mature trees stating it was always within its plan to change the car park.

But councillors have been quick to criticise the comment, stating it was never made clear in the planning application.

As reported in your Worcester News on Thursday, the trees in the car park of Tesco in Warndon Villages, Worcester, were felled last weekend.

Felix Gummer, Tesco corporate affairs manager, said: “We applied for a new car park layout. The new diagram clearly showed the new landscaping which we have carried out.

“We have gone through due process, we have done everything we should have done.”

On the plans submitted to Worcester City Council there is a before and after diagram of the car park where trees have been felled. A design and access statement, submitted on behalf of Tesco for planning permission to re-configure the car park, talks about landscaping.

It states: “The development will seek to retain the existing level of landscape features within the site.

“The extension to the car park will result in the loss of vegetation within the site.”

The document goes on to say: “Overall the level of landscaping retained and proposed within the development is similar to that within the existing store layout.”

Councillor Lucy Hodgson said: “As a local councillor if I had known that was what they where doing I would have fought it a lot harder. I would say the planning committee did not know.

“There is nothing in the plans which says they are going to cut down 75 trees.”

Warndon Parish Councillor Ted Holloway said: “There is nothing whatsoever in the diagrams to show trees being cut down.” The work at the Mill Wood Drive store sparked outrage among local people, who fear Tesco is clearing the land for a massive expansion of its shop and car park.

In 2006 Tesco withdrew an application to expand the store and build a multi storey car park after strong opposition from people.

Mr Holloway added: “The next thing it will be a multi-storey car park.”

Axing 75 trees which transpire approx 10,000 litres of water per year each means an extra 750,000 thousand litres of rain into the river. This by way of the drains which is almost immediate rather than taking days via the ground. Thanks for making flash flooding worse TESCO, and decreasing biodiversity. How does this fit in with sustainable development? Perhaps all trees in supermarkets should have tree preservation orders on, as you cannot rely on companies to act responsibly or environmentally.. YOU CANT TRUST TESCO

Sid, how right you are. Mr. Andy Roberts, Deputy Mayor, and biggest moaner of this saga, and picture in The Evening News, does his shopping there. Did he get permission to have his photo taken there ? Does "two-faced" seem appropriate ?

Tesco do get a lot of stick, but most of it is richly deserved. They have form for this kind of thing elsewhere in the country and do what they like when they like, because they know that few if any local councils can risk the cost of legal action to stop them. Be very careful about jumping to their defence, because next time you too might be unhappy with the change(s) they force through. (Having said that, did the City Council's Planning Dept.look at the plans carefully enough?)

Er....forgive me but weren't these trees that Tesco planted as landscaping when they open the store? We're no talking about 100 year old oak trees here, just trees that were around 15 years old and were part of the landscaping around THEIR store that THEY own. If these trees were worth keeping they would have had Tree Preservation Orders attached to them (by the council!). They didn't have them, Tesco are perfectly entitled to fell them if they wish.

molecat, if we could all do what we liked on our own land there would be chaos. That is why we have plannning regulations and restrictions. It is likely that the original tree planting was part of the plans which were submitted by tesco when it was built and now, with the help of council incompetence, they have gone back on that. Welcome to Tescoland.

These trees were NOT subject to any planning regulations or restrictions! There were no TPOs in place, hence Tesco are perfectly within their rights to fell them. The likes of Tesco certainly bully their way through planning applications on many occassions, but all this is is a few people in the council getting upset because they weren't bright enough to realise that you can't build a new car park on top of trees!

This action clearly demonstrates that Tesco has no interest in the environment and green issues, or the community but rather only in maximising profits by whatever means. I for one will not shop at Tesco's any longer but will give my custom and money to other supermarkets. The cutting down of the trees is an act of environmental vandalism. Shame on Tesco's and the Manager of the particular Tesco store concerned.
