WE are not surprised that drivers using the Powick Bridge roundabout on the A449 are confused by the introduction of traffic lights.

The lights are part of a pedestrian crossing but many drivers think they are signalling a clear entrance on to what, at peak times, is one of Worcester’s busiest roundabouts.

County council traffic chiefs are at pains to point out the real purpose of the lights but it is their positioning that is the problem.

A pedestrian crossing at the entrance to a major roundabout is, in our view, asking for trouble.

Traffic lights on and around roundabouts are normally there to improve traffic flow at peak times rather than to help pedestrians.

We appreciate many walkers, cyclists and joggers use this area and, of course, there needs to be some provision for them.

We are not highway planners and this may be the best place for this crossing. But we would be interested to know if there are any other options in the area. We also have concerns that some of the lane markings leading on to the roundabout from the Carrington bridge are less than clear.

Our real fear is that the new lights will lead to an accident because of their confusing nature.

In the meantime, we would echo the message given today by Councillor Derek Prodger – remember what the lights are there for and do not take a green light as a sign that you can enter the roundabout.
