A WORCESTERSHIRE hospital has been closed to visitors to protect patients from the spread of diarrhoea and vomiting.

Visitors are banned from the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch from today.

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust took the decision to stop the spread of the illness which includes the highly infectious Norovirus.

Visitors had already been advised before this not to come to any of the county's three main hospitals if possible.

Some wards have had to be closed to new admissions and some non-urgent surgery cancelled to fight the spread of the bug which travels into the air when an infected patient is sick.

So far no plans have been announced to close Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester.

The situation at the Alexandra will be reviewed later this week.

Ward staff were briefed on Tuesday night so they could alert evening visitors.
