Mobile library grinds to a halt

MINOR technical problems put the brakes on one of Worcestershire’s mobile libraries yesterday.
The mobile library vehicle – one of four operated by Worcestershire County Council, was photographed being towed by a recovery vehicle along Castle Street, in Worcester at about 2pm.
The mobile book service which visits schools, villages and towns around the county is based at Stourport.
A county council spokesman said: “As far as we’re aware, the vehicle is being checked over but engineers think it’s just going to need a minor repair.
“Any customers who were expecting it on Friday afternoon would have been called and told about the problem.”
The Stourport vehicle does not operate during weekends and is expected to be back on the road by Monday.
The mobile library carries about 4,000 books including poetry, popular fiction and audio books. People can also order DVDs and CDs and books held at the county’s libraries.
Last year, the number of mobile library vehicles was cut from five to four, saving the county council £26,000. The number of visits in the service timetable was also reduced.
