POUND coins with campaign stickers on them are the latest weapons in the fight against university tuition fees in Worcestershire.

More than 9,000 stickered £1 coins went into circulation across the UK on Monday.

The sum of £9,000 is how much students in England and Northern Ireland pay in fees over the course of a degree.

Tuition fees have now been set at up to £3,145 per year, per student in England and Northern Ireland.

Fees in Wales are capped at £1,255 and there are no tuition fees at all in Scotland.

Local Member of Youth Parliament Alice Bond is backing the campaign by circulating the coins in Worcestershire.

The initiative, part of a UK Youth Parliament campaign to abolish university tuition fees, is being launched as thousands of students prepare to start university.

According to a recent UK Youth Parliament survey of 6,000 young people, one in three young people wanting to go to university say they cannot afford to go.
