River plunge lorry driver questioned

A MAN is being questioned by police after a lorry plunged into the Severn.

The man, aged in his 20s and believed by police to be the driver, was found safe in the the Wolverley area at 4.30pm yesterday after the Leyland DAF truck laden with wood was found submerged in the river at Upper Arley, near Kidderminster.

He is being interviewed by police this morning but has not been arrested.

Fire crews used boats and specialist cameras to search the river following reports of the incident at about 1.15pm yesterday.

Firefighters were called in from Worcester, Droitwich, Kidderminster and Evesham to look for the driver and any passengers but the search was called off around 5pm.

The County Air Ambulance was also called and Severn Area Rescue Association was also involved in the search.

Police divers were also put on stand-by but were not deployed.

A spokesman for West Mercia police confirmed that a man was being questioned but said no-one had been arrested in relation to the incident.
