WEEKLY bin collections are coming back - but only for residents of Wyre Forest.

Wyre Forest District Council has announced its plans to reintroduce weekly collections due to the massive unpopularity of fortnightly collections with the general public.

Councillor Tracey Onslow, cabinet member for operational services, said: “Introducing fortnightly collections in 2003 was the single most unpopular decision made by the council in recent years.

“We regularly get complaints from residents about the hygiene of their bins, especially during the warmer summer months, and we are determined to do something about it.”

She said the council was “actively looking at affordable ways” to reintroduce weekly collections.

The council plans to give each Wyre Forest property a new 120-litre capacity wheelie bin, which would be used for household waste.

The 240-litre bins currently used for household waste would then be used for recycling.

Both bins would be emptied weekly, on the same day and at the same time. The new scheme is expected to be in place by the end of next year.

Coun Onslow said the new collections could result in recycling rates being increased by 12 per cent, reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.

Council leader John Campion promised the new system would not mean higher council taxes for local residents.
