COMMENT: Miraculous progress of brave McAyla

McAYLA Johnston is clearly a real little battler. The 11-year-old was the victim of a terrible accident last month when she was knocked down on London Road in Worcester – just a day before she was due to start her first year at Nunnery Wood High School.

The youngster was in a coma for more than a week and continues to be treated at Birmingham Children’s Hospital with parents Terri and David at her bedside.

McAyla’s recovery so far has been nothing short of miraculous. Terri and David had been warned she would need round-the-clock care for the rest of her life.

Now she is showing signs of improvement. She still has a long way to go but her parents tell us today just what a fighter she is.

Their courage also comes through in their words.

They have faced the kind of scene every parent dreads but are focusing on the positives in McAyla’s slow recovery. She has not spoken since the accident but Terri and David are sure she recognises them and is responding to them.

McAyla, her parents and sisters have been through a dreadful experience. We have no doubt there will be many tough times to come for her and them.

But she is alive and making progress – and is surrounded by love.

McAyla is obviously a vital part of a tight-knit family. They have our very best wishes for better times ahead.

The time has come for us all to look at how traffic is moved within our city. We cant stop it nor should we. We should however aim to make worcester SAFER for padestrians who CHOOSE to walk. Traffic is a vital part of the economy yet we cant have fear amoungst people wanting to use thier feet to get around. WORCESTER is a great City and can become a model to others if they take the challenge and I mean REAL CHALLENGE in placing padestrians as a VERY high priority. We are lagging far behind other cities and towns in our signage, safety crossings and pavements. Yes it all costs money but we had better start looking at what we are spending it on and what that spend can mean for the future of this City. Some may want to be "Green" and walk more, though we dont provide the security, safety and support they need.............so come on all you elected council members, local companies and big business start making real changes to this city. Paving the high street may make the Guildhall look good but you cant walk into town to see it from MANY Worcester suburbs as the roads and pavements are not safe to do so.

Dave

My absolute sympathies to you and your family, I'm unsure if I could have written such a balanced post in your position.

I'm hopeing the medical boys and girls can pull off one of their miracules for you.

I've started a topic in the forum section, to see what the combined minds of the evening news readership can come up with, regarding the problem of people needing to share space with vehicles.

London road has concerned me over the years, as my children attend blessed edwards school, they have all expressed the wish to cycle, I don't have time to accompany them, so as their dad, I just had to say no, I consider it too dangerous.

As a bloke, it sounds a bit girly to say, but my heart goes out to you.

For what its worth, good luck.
