VILLAGES would face “devastation” if plans to build thousands of new homes went ahead, according to a Liberal Democrat MEP.

Liz Lynne, who represents the West Midlands, has been meeting people living in Kempsey, near Worcester, who are unhappy about proposals to build up to 3,000 new homes on green space by 2026.

The plans form part of the South Worcestershire Joint Core Strategy outlining how local authorities will satisfy the Government’s demand to build about 25,000 new homes in the area. Worcester City Council, Wychavon District Council and Malvern Hills District Council make up the strategy group.

Ms Lynne – in the area attending her party’s regional conference in Pershore – was invited to Kempsey by local parliamentary candidate Richard Burt.

She said: “The housing numbers agreed by local councils are unrealistic and would lead to the devastation of villages like Kempsey. Far more emphasis should be given to developing brown field sites in urban areas where regeneration is desperately needed, but of course the cheaper option is to build on green open spaces.

“I have listened carefully to the views of villagers and been shown documents and plans illustrating the extent of possible development across Kempsey parish boundaries.

“I have encouraged villagers to seek support from all parties and work hard to defeat these proposals. I will certainly add my own views to the consultation process.”
