Crossing would have saved our girl from injury

THE parents of a schoolgirl hit by a car while crossing a main road in Worcester have launched a campaign to make a busy junction safer for pedestrians.

David Lamb and Terri Johnston want pelican crossings installed across Wyld’s Lane and all the way across London Road, near Tesco Express.

They also want to see more signs put up along London Road to make motorists more aware that schools are nearby.

Their daughter McAyla was knocked over further up London Road near the entrance to Heron Lodge as she tried to make her way to Tesco Express from her home in Foxwell Street on Sunday, September 7.

The 11-year-old is suffering with acquired brain injury (ABI) but continues to make remarkable progress in what will be a lengthy recovery.

The nearest crossing that spans the whole width of London Road is uphill from both Red Hill Primary School and Tesco Express.

Mr Lamb said the accident might never have happened if crossings were installed at every junction of the crossroads because she would have used them.

“That intersection is just diabolical,” said the 40-year-old. “You cannot cross there safely. It’s poorly designed, you haven’t a clue where you’re supposed to be, it’s just scary.

“Every day you will see school children stop and then just run because there’s no way of knowing which way the traffic is coming from and when. It’s not how we should be crossing roads.

“There’s a lot of elderly people living around here as well who might want to go to Tesco but can’t because they think they’ll probably get run over.”

Mr Lamb also wants to see bigger, brighter signs put up along London Road warning drivers about hazards in the area.

Worcester MP Mike Foster, who has lived in the London Road area for 15 years, is behind the campaign. He said the crossroads was a “nightmare” which required people to “take their lives into their own hands”.

He also urged highway engineers to look at the possibility of introducing a 20mph speed limit around the area.

Mr Foster urged Worcestershire County Council, which is responsible for highways, to do anything it could to help make that part of London Road safer for pedestrians but added he feared nothing would be done because there had not been enough accidents.

A council spokesman said any requests from residents to make alterations to roads are always looked at.

He said 20mph limits around schools are already being considered and added changes being made to the junction would depend on data the council collates, as well as feedback from residents, schools and businesses in the area.

He said if it was decided changes should be made, the council would look to access Government funding because it costs £30,000 to install a new zebra crossing and £100,000 for a light-operated crossing.

What is needed is a look at all the main roads into worcester from the M5 as none of the following have safe crossings they being London road, Tolladine road, New town road and Rianbow hill, Bath road is well sorted as well as Barborn,How ever the above three roads are rubbish in safty as there is very very long gaps for safe crossing. To think that there is Children, elderly and Disabled people trying to cross any on of the above roads and many times i have seen people run like mad or stand in middle of road as they wait for lorrys busses and cars to go passed, just wish some one would just look at the roads as a person trying to cross then we could get some where but they dont they look at them as drivers,

I drive this road regularly, a petition was got up when Tescos first planned to install an Express there regarding general road safety in that area and also the impact it would have on other traders in the Seabright area.
As a driver up the hill it is extra hazardous due to vehicles waiting to go in, and the number of people pulling out, but the powers that be decided otherwise.
Speeding drivers also increase problems for pedestrians crossing the road. However, there are two adequate crossing places withing easy distance, which as a pedestrian I would have made the effort to use.
People forget that drivers are also pedestrians when they get out of their cars.
My heart goes out to this family and this young girl, not suggesting that was the case in this instance as I know it was not, but that does not excuse the fact that too many adults teach the children to play chicken on dangerous roads instead of teaching them about crossing safely.

It is about time we looked at WHERE we place so called road safety crossings in THIS COUNTRY. There is ONE CROSSING between Spetchly Rd Roundabout and TESCOS EXPRESS with hundreds of school children crossing/walking the area of the road EVERYDAY, the junction at Wylds Ln is WRONG.To say that a main A road has a crossing on just after a bend and another that only goes to half the side of the road is adequate is WRONG.I too drive this road all the time, I walk to the shops too, YET even I do not walk AWAY from TESCOS to cross the road, NOT MANY if very few people naturally walk away from thier destination to reach it..............let alone children. The campaign is to get the COUNCIL to make the AREA MORE padestrian friendly as in the current state you may as well cross the M5.

I also find it strange that it will cost £100000 to put in a crossing from Seabright pub to the carpet shop side and to cross Wylds Lane. It is a narrow road yet we allow parking on bends and double yellows on other parts. Lets get the school children in the area to cross the road, each one at a time, taking a chance at a crossing, where they SHOULD have right of WAY as a padestrian but DONT. Another child or person run over here................
dies, what we gonna say then.............let
s not use hindsight as a tool to get somthing done. Lets get it done NOW and get other roads sorted in WORCESTER. After all just because I may not drive does not mean I cant cross the road in LOGICAL SAFE PLACES!

I do not know of two adequate crossing on London Road and I too travel this road every day and have lived in this area all my life. I know of one very poorly placed crossing that crosses from past the main local residential area to nothing on the other side.
