FELLOWSHIP

Worcester News: FELLOWSHIP: Dr Andrew Sleigh

DR ANDREW Sleigh, group chief technology officer of Malvern-based QinetiQ is receiving a fellowship from the University of Worcester today to recognise his outstanding contribution to the defence sector.

A fellow of the prestigious Institute of Physics, Mr Sleigh has more than 30 years of experience in international technology development.

He has worked as a research physicist in thermal imaging and artificial intelligence; he has led a number of science-based organisations in the public and private sector and as a director general in Whitehall.

Mr Sleigh is currently an adjunct professor at the Imperial College Tanaka Business School, a business adviser to King’s College London and a member of the CBI West Midlands Council. He was part of the management team that took the DRA/DERA through its transformation in the 1990s, and re-joined QinetiQ when it was formed in 2001 where he undertook a number of directorial roles until becoming group chief technology officer in 2007. University of Worcester vice-chancellor Professor David Green said: “Andrew has made a significant contribution to science and to the productive development of both the business and defence sectors.

“His strong leadership qualities are much in demand, as evidenced by his leading role in QinetiQ, one of Britain’s most prominent knowledge-based companies.

“We are delighted to honour Andrew and recognise his many achievements throughout an illustrious career.”

FELLOWSHIP

Worcester News: FELLOWSHIP: David Harper

TOP Barn Farm entrepreneur David Harper is receiving a fellowship from the University of Worcester today in recognition of his business innovation in the region.

Mr Harper trained in agriculture at Harper Adams Agricultural College and then went to Uganda where he managed an experimental farm from 1962 to 1964.

On returning to the UK, he built up Top Barn Farm at Holt Heath and since 1990 has pioneered diversification there.

The whole family is now involved in the enterprise with a business centre, farm shop, camping facilities, fishing and an activity centre as well as several hundred acres of arable farming.

The farm also plays host to two centres involved in different aspects of care farming.

In 1997 Mr Harper was awarded an OBE for services to agricultural development work in Africa.

University of Worcester vice-chancellor Professor David Green said: “David’s work has strong links with many of the University of Worcester’s courses and some of our areas of specialist research.

“The inspiring work and success of Top Barn Farm raises the profile of business, science, sport, animal care and education regionally and nationally. David’s story of determination and success is a first class example to those of our students who are equally determined to start up their own businesses upon graduating.”

MASTER'S

Worcester News: MASTER'S: Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson

ONE of Britain’s best-known Paralympic athletes, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, is receiving an honorary master’s degree from the University of Worcester today for her work in the field of disability sport and awareness.

Dame Tanni has performed at top flight level, in distances ranging from 100m to the marathon. Her comprehensive set of British and world records make her achievements second to none in the disability sport arena.

She is also an accomplished TV and radio presenter.

Dame Tanni has used a wheelchair since the age of seven. She discovered an appetite and talent for sport while in primary school and soon became an accomplished all rounder at sports. At 18, she was selected for her first World Wheelchair Games and a year later won her first Paralympic medal at the Seoul Olympics. By the conclusion of the Athens Games in 2004 she had taken her paralympic medal tally to 15 medals, including 11 gold.

University of Worcester vice-chancellor Professor David Green said: “We are delighted to be able to honour Tanni and her vitally important work at this year’s graduation ceremonies.

“Everyone was inspired by the achievements of our Paralympians as well as our Olympians at the Beijing games this summer. Tanni has been a true trail blazer.

“The university’s thriving Institute of Sport and Exercise Science has many students who have been truly inspired by Tanni’s achievements and dedication.

“She is an inspiration to all, and her determination to success is a real motivator.”
