IN our third and final feature marking this week's University of Worcester graduation ceremonies, we list all the people who will be presented with their degrees at Worcester cathedral today. We also highlight four people for a special mention.

HONORARY MASTER'S

Worcester News: HONORARY MASTER'S: Charles Morgan

CHARLES Morgan is receiving an honorary master’s degree from the University of Worcester today to mark his contribution to the motor industry, innovation, and to the regional economy.

Mr Morgan is the corporate strategy director of the Morgan Motor Company, the world’s oldest privately owned motor manufacturer, which is based in Malvern.

The company is fast approaching its centenary celebration. Mr Morgan led the team that developed the Aero 8 – the first completely new Morgan for 30 years.

Mr Morgan has also recently been appointed director of the consortium formed for the LIFECar project, which aims to make Morgan the first sports car manufacturer of a zero emissions car powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.

Before taking on the family firm, he worked in publishing and as an ITN news cameraman.

University of Worcester vice-chancellor Professor David Green said: “The Morgan Motor Company is an outstanding example of innovation through change. It exemplifies outstanding traditional company values coupled with a desire to embrace new thinking in order to flourish in an ever-changing world.

“Charles Morgan has led this change and his work with zero emissions cars is inspiring. He is a most deserving recipient of an honorary degree from the University of Worcester.”

ENVIRONMENT

Worcester News: ENVIRONMENT: Matt Dulson

THE desire to study an area that “had real value and importance” was the key for Matt Dulson, who graduates with a degree in environmental management from the University of Worcester today.

Malvern-born Mr Dulson said: “University study much passed me by when I was a school leaver. I chose the work route, which was right for me at the time. However, as the years went by, I began to feel a stronger desire to study at university level.”

As 39-year-old Mr Dulson was moving from the Netherlands, he was delighted to discover that the University of Worcester offered the perfect course – just up the road from his family home.

He said: “My plan was to find employment in the environmental management sector once the course was over, so I opted for a balance of environmental and ecological modules. I particularly enjoyed the fieldwork. The field trip to Provence in the final year was very valuable. It’s a great way to learn – exploring an area and really experiencing a sense of place.”

Mr Dulson is now working as a graduate environmental consultant for the Halcrow Group in the Worcester office. A member of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) team, he is involved in a broad range of projects supporting the existing team in the preparation and coordination of environmental statements.

HONORARY MASTER'S

Worcester News: HONORARY MASTER'S: Professor Mervyn King

PROFESSOR Mervyn King, the governor of the Bank of England, is receiving an honorary master’s degree from the University of Worcester today in recognition of his work in central banking.

Mr King has held key national financial and economic responsibilities for more than 20 years. From 1998 to 2003 he was deputy governor and chief economist at the Bank of England, and he became executive director in 1991.

Mr King is a fellow of the British Academy and an honorary fellow of King’s and St John’s Colleges Cambridge. He is a foreign honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, patron of Worcestershire County Cricket Club and a trustee of the National Gallery.

University of Worcester vice-Chancellor Professor David Green said: “The Bank of England is a key institution in British society. Recent events have made this clear to the whole world. Professor Mervyn King is an outstanding economist and public servant. He is also a cricket lover who comes to New Road when his busy schedule permits and has found time to play a key role in promoting Chance To Shine, which has helped disadvantaged children take up cricket and appreciate sport.

“We are delighted to be honouring Professor Mervyn King in this way.”

SPORTS STUDIES

Worcester News: SPORTS STUDIES: Rob Taylor

UNIVERSITY of Worcester student Rob Taylor will play professional football for Port Vale after graduating with a BSc in sports studies today.

The 23-year-old impressed Vale manager Lee Sinnott during trials for the team’s reserves, after initially catching the eye of scouts following his strong performances for Nuneaton Borough in Conference North.

It is another success story for the University of Worcester first team player, who was also selected to play foootball for England Universities this year.

The midfield player has been given a two-year contract at Vale Park, starting later this year.

Mr Taylor, who was born in Shrewsbury and went to Bridgnorth Endowed School, took sports studies at Shrewsbury College of Arts before then going on to undergraduate study at the University of Worcester.

“My plan was to ensure that I had an education and degree to fall back on later in life, and I’ll now be giving it my very best to succeed at Port Vale,” he said.

Mick Donovan, head of the Institute of Sport and Exercise Science, said: “Congratulations to Rob, who is one of many students who choose to combine study with top-class sport at the University of Worcester.”
