WORCESTER’S footbridge over the River Severn was closed this morning while engineers inspect the structure to see if it is safe.
Engineers from Halcrow - Worcestershire County Council’s partner which deals with day to day bridge management - is investigating a report that one of the suspension pins on Sabrina Bridge has worked its way out.
County council senior engineer Richard Attwood said a member of staff from the council’s Malvern division, who is not a bridge engineer, reported that he thought there was a problem with the bridge.
“Halcrow engineers are out there investigating. It is a precautionary measure. I do not know exactly what the problem is. They are investigating and will report back.
“The colleague from our Malvern offices said he had seen something which he was concerned about but he is not a bridge engineer. He thought one of the suspension pins was working its way out.”
All access to the bridge, which links Grand Stand Road and Hylton Road, has been closed. Engineers started investigating at about 9am today but it is not known how long the bridge will be closed.
