TWO bungling burglars were caught after police followed the tyre tracks of their bicycles.

The fresh marks made in wet weather led to the home of Justin Leach in Bridge Street, Worcester.

Police found Leach and his accomplice Crimea Price hiding inside the flat, said Jason Aris, prosecuting.

Stashed in the property were 18 designer handbags worth £3,394, stolen from Tandini, a shop in the city’s Copenhagen Street.

Leach, aged 31, now of Barley Close, Cheltenham, and 32-year-old Price, of Carlisle Road, Ronkswood, Worcester, pleaded guilty to burglary.

Judge Andrew Geddes jailed Price for two-and-a-half years but reduced Leach’s sentence to two years because of an early admission of guilt.

The judge revealed that Leach had 10 burglaries on his record of 103 offences.

Price had seven burglaries among 100 previous convictions.

The judge recognised that both men had made considerable progress in tackling drug addictions while on remand in jail. He hoped their success would continue once they were freed.

The raiders were caught on CCTV on their bikes. One was carrying a bulging duvet cover, Mr Aris told Worcester Crown Court.

Police found the tyre marks which led to Leach’s barricaded front door.

Inside the flat were a chisel, face mask and a hooded top containing fragments of glass from the burgled shop.

Leach told the arresting officers: “I don’t care. I do it for money. This is the least of my worries.”

His defence counsel Simon Burns said he had been addicted to crack cocaine since the age of 15.

He kicked the habit for six years but lapsed after a long-standing romance broke up.

Lee Marklew, for Price, said he was now facing the long- est sentence in his criminal career.

Other raids had mostly been on outbuildings.

At least these two will be off the streets for a year or so. Being career criminals they will more than likely be back inside afterwards. Then maybe Lee Marklew will be able to announce a further landmark in the sentencing history of his client. How irrelevant was that comment! As for the above comment, well......

eh?! The Judge has jailed the pair for 2.5 and 2 years. There has been no reduction for anything to do with drugs but early admission of guilt - which is prescribed in Law reduce it.

This is a bit serious - they obviously need help with drug rehabilitation...ins
tead of prison, perhaps?

But does rehab work - I have seen nothing yet, to suggest it does - so far! (Anybody out there actually recovered and rejoined the human race?)

If the drug "story" is NOT true, then for what they have done, with their track record, we taxpayers should spend the £30,000 a year EACH and keep them inside for longer than two years!

Tell you what - how about stopping the drugs at source?

Cut off the supply and all that. Well, It's not been tried yet, has it?

Cold turkey, is it? Just a thought.

An interesting point Common Sense about stopping drugs at the source - sadly, most of it comes fmo Afganistan and that is the only thing they have there to prop up their ecomony - cut that off (which could easily be done by our Forces) and all you do then is destroy and entire country of people. Its catch-22.

"The judge revealed that Leach had 10 burglaries on his record of 103 offences."
"Price had seven burglaries among 100 previous convictions. "

So what happened to the three strikes law? The scheme, which introduced automatic three-year jail sentences for a third burglary conviction, which was launched in December 1999 by the then Home Secretary, Jack Straw.
Another b******* toothless government initiative!

If you are baffled by this, then the case of the bloke banged up for nearly 5 years for what amounts to non violent political activities......he was found guilty on 3 charges, each carrying 6 months max.... how does he get 5 years?????
As they say , "the law is an ****" I am afraid they make it up on the hoof,,so to speak.
