WORCESTERSHIRE County Council is currently evaluating its assets and other community resources in Malvern to see how they can be best used for the benefit of local people in the future.

It is working with Malvern Hills District Council and Malvern Town Council as well as groups and organisations in the town with a view to eventually putting forward a set of proposals for public consultation.

Councillor Stephen Clee, cabinet member for corporate services, said the county council had been approached by various community groups over the future use of Malvern Hills Primary School, which is due to close due to falling pupil numbers.

“We have also been approached by Malvern county councillor Penny Morgan who wants a youth and community facility on land owned by the county council,” he said.

“We are also having discussions with the town council about their aspirations for what they want to see in Malvern.

“I called a meeting with all the interested parties and we are in the process of mapping what we have got.

“We are not making any decisions at the moment. We have not ruled anything in or anything out.

“We want to maximise the potential of our assets and we are evaluating what every organisation has got and what the people of Malvern want.”

Coun Clee said the mapping process would be finished in the spring next year and they would consult the district and town councils together with other interested parties after that about possible proposals.

“When we have done all that we will have a roadshow and go out to consult the public,” Coun Clee said.

Some Malvern residents, including town councillor William Atkinson, were concerned it could result in the loss of Malvern Town Council-owned Duke’s Meadow open space.

But Coun Clee said this was the very beginning of a long process and there were no proposals or decisions regarding particular sites.
