AN archaeological dig will take place at an historic property in Herefordshire as the council plans for a new library.

The Master’s House in Ledbury will be the scene of the dig, which will start at the beginning of January and is planned to take three weeks.

Work will take place in the section of the car park between the Master’s House and the Feather’s Wall, which means that 48 car parking spaces will be out of action during the works.

A viewing platform will be put up so people can see the work taking place.

Herefordshire Council is looking into the possibility of providing alternative car parking spaces along Bye Street.

Herefordshire Council’s assistant cultural services manager Kate Murray said: “I would like to apologise to motorists and traders for any inconvenience this work causes but we have to fully investigate the archaeological remains before pressing ahead with the development of the new library.

“We will be seeking extra parking so all who want to access the wealth of amenities in Ledbury can. We have also delayed the dig until January so it doesn’t affect the run-up to Christmas.”

Anyone who wants to volunteer for the dig can call project archaeologist Christopher Atkinson on 01432 260493.
